Divers believe that they have uncovered the remains of a wrecked ship that could have been sailing to bring back Bonnie Prince Charlie after he was defeated in 1746 at the battle of Culloden.
The team of investigators say they found the ship just off the Anglesey coast and suggest that the artefacts discovered hint that the ship may have been ferrying supplied from the King of France.
The Bonnie Price, known formally as Charles Edward Stuart, was in hiding after the failed Jacobite revolt.
The dive team will continue to investigate the wreck to analyse its archaeological importance.
Over the years many 100s of ships have been lost off the coast of North Wales but not all of them were laden with as many important finds as this. One of the most notable discoveries was a ring used for sealing documents. It bore the emblem of Mary Queen of Scots.
It is believed that this ring may have been on board as proof of the crew’s loyalties. |
