  • Hen houses dating from the 1900s, old disused petrol pumps and a child’s playhouse have all been added to a database of more than 45,000 historical sites.

Highland Council staff along with history associations and members of the public have all aided in the compilation of the Highland Historic Record.

You can view it online for the first time and it covers everything from modern age buildings to pre-historic burial cairns.

Ship-wrecks, WWII antitank defences and graveyards also made it onto the list.

Historic Scotland gave some £10,000 of funds to get the database launched.

This is an exciting compilation as it is constantly growing and evolving as we move through history. Furthermore, members of the public are being encouraged to think of their own favourite sites and then add them to the list. It would also be good if they added more information on existing places of interest.

The database records an area of rich archaeological interest, much of which is now unfortunately little more than ruins.
